NIB (Business Identification Number)
The identity of the business actor issued by the OSS Institution. NIB acts as a Company Registration Certificate (TDP), Importer Identification Number (API), and Customs Access.
1What is NIB and its Functions?
NIB (Business Identification Number) is the official identity of business actors in Indonesia that functions as a replacement for various licenses at once. Since the OSS RBA system was implemented, NIB has become a 'magic card' that replaces the TDP (Company Registration Certificate), API (Importer Identification Number), and various other business licenses. NIB is a unique 13-digit number issued electronically through the OSS portal after the company meets basic requirements such as having a Deed of Establishment and NPWP.
2How to Obtain an NIB
The NIB issuance process is done online through the oss.go.id portal. The steps are: (1) The founder or director creates an account in OSS using email and NIK, (2) Upload company documents: Deed of Establishment + SK Kemenkumham, Corporate NPWP, and management identity documents, (3) Fill in company data including domicile address and KBLI code, (4) The system will validate the data, and if passed, the NIB is issued immediately in minutes to a few hours. The issued NIB already includes basic permits for business operations according to the risk level of the chosen KBLI.
3NIB and Business Risk Levels
Every NIB is linked to a business risk level based on KBLI: Low Risk (no need for additional permits, directly operational), Medium Risk (needs Standard Certificates such as halal, SNI), and High Risk (needs special permits such as AMDAL, environmental permits). The OSS system automatically determines what permits must be completed after the NIB is issued. If mandatory permits are not met within a certain time, the NIB can be blocked and the business declared illegal.
4Difference between NIB and Old Business Licenses
Before the OSS era, business actors had to process many separate permits to various agencies: TDP to the Industry Office, SIUP to the Trade Office, location permits to the Regional Government, and so on. The process could take months. With NIB, all basic permits are integrated into one number and can be issued in hours. This drastically speeds up the business legality process and reduces bureaucracy.
Real Example
"PT Digital Solusi Indonesia just received the SK Kemenkumham. The director immediately registered on OSS to apply for an NIB with KBLI 62010 (Computer Programming Activities). After uploading the deed and company data, the NIB was issued in 2 hours with Low Risk status. With this NIB, PT Digital Solusi can immediately open a bank account, accept clients, and pay taxes without needing additional permits because the software development business is classified as low risk."
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can NIB be processed manually or must I use an agent?
NIB can be processed manually through the OSS portal for free. However, many use consultant services because the document upload and data validation process often errors if not accurate. Service fees range from IDR 500 thousand to 2 million depending on complexity.
How long is the NIB valid?
NIB is valid as long as the company is active and updates data periodically every year (LKPM Report). If it does not report or there are violations, the NIB can be frozen or revoked by OSS.
Do small businesses like MSMEs also need an NIB?
Yes, all business actors including MSMEs must have an NIB. Even Individual PTs, which are specifically for MSMEs, must still process an NIB to be legal and access banking finance or government programs.
